EDP Review: A Singer Who Stands Out

Sarah Sixsmith

Dragon Hall, Norwich, Thursday 9th November

Singer/ songwriter Sarah Sixsmith has spent recent years playing venues across the city but her performance at the medieval Dragon Hall offered a unique setting for her talent.

The ambience of the hall provided a fitting showcase for a voice which is fragile and empowered in equal portions - her tone hovers somewhere between angelic and wrought in a manner which conveys the emotional weight of her subject matter.

As she moved through her set on Thursday night it became clear she is developing an irresistable repertoire.
Whether it is the stripped down sound of Step Down or All That We Hold, or cello and bass accompanied tracks like Try and Over Me, she holds her audience's attention.

Midway through she nervously tried out an untitled new song and carried it off in a style which was guaranteed to win respect.
It was perhaps the penultimate song of the evening - A Beautiful Mystery - which provided the highlight. As she told the crowd this started out nice but turned nasty as "circumstances changed" during the writing.

It is this habit of expressing the bitter sweet nature of life, love and everything else which makes her stand out.
